Gloucestershire is one of the few English counties that have several selective grammar schools remaining. Of the seven grammar schools, two are coeducational, three are for girls only and two are for boys only. One of these grammar schools is in Cheltenham, four are in Gloucester and two are in Stroud. The following sections give some background information on the school, its academic results and OFSTED ratings.
We have gathered a range of useful information from official figures to help you get an overall impression of the school. However, we suggest that you treat the data with care and try to view the school as a whole. In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Department for Education suggests that when comparing school and college performance data it is best to:
Not make direct comparisons with previous years or between schools and colleges
Discuss with the school what factors have influenced the results and consider the pupil/student population
The school websites are a great starting point as you can get a better impression of the ethos and vision as well as data on examination results and links to the OFSTED reports. You can also find out about recent student achievements and extra-curricular activities.
Open Days are one of the best ways to find out whether a particular school is right for your child, since you get the opportunity to speak to staff and current students. You may be escorted around the school by a couple of current students, but bear in mind that no one or two students can realistically represent the school population when they are showing you the facilities. They may or may not match the interests and character of your child, but they will have some useful insight into the reality of being a student at that school.
Above all, be bold in asking schools the questions you need answering that relate to your child and be realistic on what any one school can provide.
